The director of the Department of the Persecution of Administrative Corruption (DPCA), Hotoniel Bonilla, revealed yesterday, Tuesday 14 August, that more than 124 government employees, ex-employees and banking executives have been prosecuted for suspected acts of corruption since 2004.

He said that so far 47 of them have been to court and 18 received jail sentences, with 29 more awaiting trial.

Bonilla, speaking about his time as director, said that the period when President Fernandez was in power was a unique part of the DPCA's history, as it was the first time that they had succeeded in prosecuting offenders.

He said that apart from one case, all have been through the initial hearing stage and that his eight years experience in the role have led him to the conclusion that in order to combat public and private corruption, there need to be other penalties apart from just incarceration.

He proposed a new law that looks at the confiscation of assets via the courts as an alternative option.
