tPago, the tool which allows Dominicans to use banking services and make payments from their cell phones, is planning to extend its services to Colombia, El Salvador, Puerto Rico and Guatemala.

Co-founder and secretary of tPago's Executive Committee, Day Jimenez, said that they now have around 300,000 clients in the Dominican Republic who make around 600,000 transactions a month and that the use of mobile phones to pay bills or transfer money is now a reality.

tPago began operations in the DR in 2010 with three mobile telephone operators and three financial institutions, and after two years is now being used by 16% of the banking consumer market. The user does not require Internet access, or to use minutes from their telephone plan.

The company has experienced year-on-year growth of 57%, with 10.8 million transactions worth more than US$69 million since launch.

Given the penetration of mobile phones in Latin America, estimated at 90% by the World Bank, and the fact that people always carry phones, Jimenez is confident that more users will sign on for the service that allows customers to pay bills, transfer money and recharge a cell phone or buy and transfer minutes to another phone, as well as other services.
