The government has recognized the extraordinary efforts of gymnast Yamilet Pena and judo athlete Maria Garcia in the London Olympics by giving them each an apartment. Pena placed sixth in the Olympics in vault.
Upon receiving the keys to the apartment, Pena said: "I deliver this key to my mother, who deserves it most." She expressed her appreciation to the Dominican people for all the support on the Internet. "Thanks to you all my family will live in better conditions. I cannot tell you how moved I am," said 19-year old Pena. The apartment will be in a government INVI residential complex in El Higuero, Santo Domingo North, near the Isabela Airport, on the northern side of Santo Domingo, quite far from the Gymnastics Pavilion in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympics Center.
"I had awaited this for a long time, and finally it was fulfilled. I thank the President for his consideration and the Dominican people for all their support," said Maria Garcia. She especially appreciated the push received from Diario Libre newspaper after she failed to win a medal in the Olympics. Her apartment will be in the government residential INVI complex in Higuero, La Vega.
