Incoming President Danilo Medina will open the new school year with 2,531,866 students on Monday, 20 August. There are great public expectations, according to El Nuevo Diario, focused on his pledge to fulfill the Constitutional requirement to assign 4% of the GDP to Education. As a candidate, Medina swore that he would get this funding for the Ministry of Education. Dozens of new schools have been opened over the summer including the Republic of Argentina School, the Salome Urena de Henriquez Ladies Institute, and the Polytechnic Institute in Consuelo, San Pedro de Macoris. Medina, who has already held discussions on the nutritional quality of the school breakfast programs with the head of the World Food Program, Ertharin Cousin, has said that the DR qualifies for international assistance in that area.
