The new minister of culture, Jose Antonio Rodriguez, is better known as a singer-songwriter. He is famous for his songs 'Como un bolero,' 'Para quererte' (Maridalia Hernandez) and 'Vive' (Milly Quezada), among others. He is popular with fellow artists and has been very active at artistic gatherings.
He is also married to Monika Despradel, a former classical ballet dancer, high ranking corporate with telecommunications company Orange where she plays a leading role in its active cultural promotions. She is regarded as one of the country's leading cultural promoters. As a husband and wife team, the two have organized many cultural events in the past.
Shortly after his appointment, Rodriguez told Diario Libre: "There is a government plan we have to follow and implement." He said it could be summed up in one sentence: Create new value for Dominican culture so that it can become a strong industry. During campaign months, he lead those who worked to develop the cultural plan for the Medina government proposal.
