In his maiden speech as President yesterday, Thursday 16 August, Danilo Medina announced that he would work on a plan to sign a Free Trade agreement with Haiti, which is currently the Dominican Republic's second largest trade partner.

According to Medina, more goods are traded in one single day at the border markets, which are held Mondays and Fridays, than in a whole year of exports to Central America.

For this reason he said there is a need to eliminate the primitive conditions and create frontier markets which are modern, safe and reliable.

Medina assured that he had no doubts that a commercial pact with Haiti would be beneficial to micro, small and medium-sized businesses as well as to workers in both countries.

Medina's government is also pledging to create a clear and transparent immigration policy that will respect international conventions and immigrants' rights. The new President confirmed that his government would implement the new Immigration Law which was approved this year, and the National Plan against the Trade of People and the Trafficking of Immigrants.

He also said that his administration would pursue any government officials or military personnel found guilty of corruption and they would feel the full force of the law.
