After congratulating the new President Danilo Medina and Vice President Margarita Cedeno, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez spoke of the priorities that he believes have to be tackled urgently.

They include guaranteeing a good education to children and young people, and to train teachers who should also be paid a fair salary.

He also asked Medina to fight relentlessly against poverty, contribute to bring dignity to the elderly, and creating more jobs.

The Cardinal also urged the new government to work on citizen security, in the face of the rising crime rate.

The priorities he mentioned include electricity, strengthening institutions and zero tolerance for corruption in all forms.

The Cardinal, who celebrated mass in commemoration of the 149 anniversary of the Restoration yesterday, 16 August, also asked Danilo Medina and Candida Montilla's children to pray constantly so that God might help their father govern.
