After Danilo Medina was declared President yesterday, Thursday 16 August, former head of state Leonel Fernandez left the National Congress. El Caribe reports that Fernandez was accompanied by his son Omar Fernandez, his assistant Danilo Perez, senator Felix Bautista, former minister of Public Works Victor Diaz Rua, former director of the Supervisory Office of Public Works of the Presidency Luis Sifre, and other former government officials.
Fernandez, who had arrived in a Lincoln car with the official number plate 01, left Congress in the same car, but as soon as Medina had been proclaimed President, the number plate was swiftly changed to OP00580. El Caribe observes that the former President's vehicle stopped at the red lights, having lost its presidential transit privileges.
Following the inaugural, the former President then went to his mother's house in the Las Praderas sector of the city. Half an hour later, he attended a farewell luncheon organized by his mother at the meeting room at Mercado Financiero Banco BDI-BLH on Av. Sarasota where he spent two hours with around 150 guests.
That morning, then President Leonel Fernandez had arrived at the Presidential Palace at 9:05 and stayed in his office for just over an hour. He then made his way to the congressional building for the transfer of mandate ceremony. As he walked down the main entrance to the Presidential Palace, El Caribe reports that many employees had tears in their eyes.
After the luncheon, at 4pm, Fernandez spent three hours at Funglode headquarters where prior to returning to his residence in Naco.
News reports say that he did not attend the inaugural party at the Presidential Palace, where his wife, Margarita Cedeno received congratulations from special guests, diplomats and local supporters and VIPs.
