The Dominican Republic's two-time Olympic gold medalist Felix Sanchez is running at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium today, Friday 17 August as part of the Diamond League competitions. He is one of eleven Olympic gold medalists competing in the event.
Sanchez has garnered special attention in Stockholm, especially as many still recall the memorable moment when at the medals ceremony for the men's 400m hurdles he was unable to contain his emotions when hearing the national anthem.
Sanchez had pledged to win another medal for his grandmother who had passed away just shortly before he competed at the 2008 Games. His win with a world-leading 47.63 at the London Olympics was regarded as one of the bigger surprises on the track.
Sanchez in Stockholm is competing against London Olympics silver medalist Michael Tinsley of the US, fellow two-time Olympic champion Angelo Taylor, Trinidad's Jehue Gordon and Jamaican Leford Green, who were fifth, sixth and seventh in the London final.
Felix Sanchez has announced he will continue his running career by competing in the Diamond League, with his last meet scheduled to be the XIV World Athletics Cup in Moscow from 10-18 August 2013. Sanchez turns 35 on 30 August 2012.
