Vice President Margarita Cedeno has announced that the Progresando program she headed as First Lady and the Solidaridad program managed by former Vice President Rafael Alburquerque are to be merged.

"This will make it possible to expand the reach of the government social programs for families living in extreme poverty," she said, as reported on the Presidency website.

Progresando was one of the key programs she was in charge of when First Lady under the Fernandez administration.

Solidaridad is the welfare card program headed by former Vice President Rafael Alburquerque during his two terms from 2004-2012.

"We are going to continue with the projects that we have in the Vice Presidency. You know that the Vice President coordinates the social cabinet of all the government. And well, some other roles that the President is delegating to us," she said, as reported in Diario Libre.

President Medina also appointed his close aide Cesar Prieto to manage the Presidency Social Plan.

Hoy newspaper described her first-day-at-work look as "simpler." She arrived with her hair in a bun and a simple navy blue pantsuit and flats. She asked to be photographed and sent the photo to her Twitter followers.

On Friday 17 August she took part in the inauguration of 10 technology workshops at the Technical Professional Training Institute (INFOTEP) accompanied by the Vice President of Taiwan Wu Den-yih. Taiwan donated US$3.7 million for the series of workshops that will be taught at the Centro Tecnologico de la Gerencia Regional de Infotep in Santo Domingo and another five are mobile. Also attending the ceremony was Ambassador Tomas Ping-Fu Hou of Taiwan and the Minister of Labor of Taiwan Ju-Hsuan Wang. Dr. Idionix Perez, director of Infotep made the welcoming words.

Vice President Wu Den-yih said that the project is part of the vision and solidarity of the Republic of China of Taiwan. The 36 instructors were trained in Taiwan.

The workshops will provide training in industrial electronics, telecommunications, audiovisuals, computer repairs, data and Internet, and car mechanics. The mobile units will provide training in dressmaking, residential and industrial electricity, baking and pastry, plumbing.

In an interview with El Caribe, Wu Den-yih said that Taiwan has contributed over US$100 million towards the industrial, agriculture, technology and services sectors.

He added that Taiwan could contribute to renewable energy, particularly wind and solar energy projects.
