Public Health Minister Lorenzo Wilfredo (Freddy) Hidalgo has announced that his administration's major goal will be to reduce the mother-child mortality rate in the Dominican Republic by 50% by 2015. He said that the challenges ahead are to expand the public health network and improve primary care nationwide.
Hoy reports today, Monday 20 August on how Hidalgo successfully coordinated public health in the country's 8th Region - the provinces of La Vega, Monsenor Nouel (Bonao) and Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui) - since 1997 and "achieved a revolution." The new Minister is known for his successes in the region with the construction and operation of several hospitals, including the much-praised Juan Bosch Trauma Hospital.
