In an interview with Listin Diario, President Michel Martelly of Haiti, in the country for Danilo Medina's inaugural ceremony, suggested that the Bilateral Mixed Commission should discuss President Danilo Medina's proposal for a free trade agreement between both nations.
He commented that based on the inaugural speech, President Medina has "very ambitious policies for his people". He said that he was surprised that President Medina referred to relations with Haiti in his inaugural speech, but sees that as a "good attitude."
Commenting on the free trade agreement he said: "All is possible and it would be good for there to be one, but we have to be careful because the problems that it could cause have to be assessed. Even though we are two brother peoples, there are certain aspects of trade that are delicate because what could be of interest and convenient for the Dominican Republic could be a disadvantage and harmful to Haiti. I believe that proposal should be studied and discussed in depth by the Mixed Bilateral Commission."
Commenting on the United Nations representative Valerie Julliand's proposal that the Dominican Republic open its door for free movement to Haitians, he said: "Due to the bad administration of our border in the past 25 years the situation at the border has much deteriorated and we do not even have a gate. Happily our Dominican neighbors do not take advantage of this unfortunate situation. Nevertheless, I can say that our government is firmly working on this matter, both at the embassy and at the border itself to correct this situation. I should tell you that one of our first priorities is that the situation at the border costs about US$300 million a year. Imagine if we could not have to spend part of that money, or even 50% or 25%, all that we could do with that money," he said.
Martelly denied he had stood up the ambassador of Haiti and Ministry of Foreign Relations official welcome at Las Americas by landing at La Isabela last week. He said that prior to landing air traffic control instructed them to divert to Isabela because of poor visibility.
