As usual, less than 50% of students are reported to have shown up for the first day of classes at public schools yesterday, Monday 20 August. This year, the President of the Republic, Danilo Medina and the Minister of Education Josefina Pimentel kicked off the school year in San Juan de la Maguana, Medina's home province. The usual has been for the President to visit a school in the National District for the annual start of school event.

The government announced the implementation of the extended school day (eight hours) initiative starting this year, in keeping with the commitment by President Danilo Medina during his inaugural speech.

Some 2.7 million students were called back to classes in public and private schools but less than half attended, according to reports.

The Minister said that the extended school day plan would initially be applied in 96 schools across the country. Some 3,800 students in elementary and high school will benefit.

Pimentel thanked the President for leaving her at the head of the Ministry, which will oblige her to continue working to strengthen the nation's teaching corps. "Mr. President, I would like to thank you for your initiative of assigning, starting in 2013, 4% of the Gross Domestic Product to education, in order to build as you have said, an inclusive and quality educational system," said the Minister of Education.

According to Pimentel, this administration has the responsibility of creating an educational system aimed at building citizenship solidarity and job creation as demanded by Dominican society. "We know that the national education sector faces enormous challenges, but we also appreciate the fact that there is sufficient will committed to tackle them and to turn this educational model that you have proposed into reality," she stated.
