President Danilo Medina sent a bill to the Senate for a new Customs Law to replace the existing legislation yesterday, Monday 20 August. The new bill seeks to update the Customs legislation in line with new customs principles that better reflect the country's economic, juridical, technological and institutional progress. In the reasoning for the bill, the Executive Branch says that the current legislation is incompatible with existing international agreements and commitments made by the Dominican Republic. Medina says that the initiative seeks to facilitate trade, following guidelines in the DR-CAFTA (US and Central America) and EPA (Europe) trade agreements.

The proposed legislation incorporates the use of digital and online technology including electronic signatures for Customs processing. An electronic file for an import would have the same validity as a paper file. It also establishes two new recourses for appeals.
