The government and the Dominican Consortium of Concessionary Roads (Dovicon) have signed a 30-year agreement whereby the concessionaire will collect tolls and maintain the nation's main highways.

According to Listin Diario, the deal was struck in January and passed by the National Congress. This is all part of the well-known US$471 million "Viadom" project, which covers the Duarte Highway from Santo Domingo to Santiago, the 6 November Highway, some 10 kilometers, to San Cristobal, the third stage of the Santiago-Navarrete Highway and the highway to Puerto Plata. The plan also includes the Santiago Beltway and the highway to Bani. The project has a total length of 285kms, of which 199kms are to be rehabilitated and 68 km are greenfield areas.

The government first announced the tender for these highways in October 2008 and companies in Europe, the United States and South America are reported to have showed an interest.

The agreement will involve considerable increases in current tolls and new ones to be introduced, including a toll road to Puerto Plata. It includes the 24km ring road to bypass Santiago.
