In a joint operation by the National Drug Control Department (DNCD), the Navy, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the US Coast Guard, anti-drug smuggling agents seized more than 1,000 kilograms of cocaine off the coast of Barahona in a 45-foot speedboat with a crew of four suspected to be Colombians.

DNCD president Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo identified the men arrested as Aluchom Castro, Arechelleo Bocaleo, Ruben Bucaria and Micton Sretellea. Rosado Mateo said the boat had come from South America. The men were handed over to the US authorities and were taken to Puerto Rico together with the cocaine. The consignment was in 40 bundles of 25 packages each.

DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebron said that Operation Anvil and Hammer began at 11:15pm on Sunday night, 19 August, some 280 nautical miles off the coast of Barahona. Three Dominican Navy coast guard units, two DNCD speedboats and US Coast Guard and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) service spy planes tracked the drug 18 nautical miles from Santo Domingo in a six-hour pursuit. Lebron singled out the role played in the operation by the Dominican Navy, now under Vice Admiral Edwin Dominici Rosario.

The DR was the intended transshipment point for sending the drugs to the US or Europe.
