The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources plans to start planting four million trees throughout the country on Thursday, 23 August. The new Minister, Dr. Bautista Rojas Gomez, the former Minister for Public Health, said that the planting program would begin with the 6 November Highway that links the National District with San Cristobal. Rojas Gomez said that the initiative has the support of the Ministry of Education and the Armed Forces, as well as other public and private institutions.
He said that he would be working in the streets, the provinces and the municipalities across the country, as he was not a man who liked working behind a desk.
Rojas Gomez announced that he would introduce a new approach to environmental protection, prioritizing prevention rather than imposing penalties. He stated that a preventive approach was an essential element for strengthening the public awareness strategy, involving all sectors and actors.
The new minister pointed out, however, that this did not mean he would tolerate violations of current environmental protection rules.
