The mayor of Bani, Nelson Camilo Landestoy (Chacho), has ordered the closure of the Salinas de Puerto Hermoso salt mines, leaving more than 200 families in the small town without work. The closure was approved by the local council, which accepted the mayor's proposal on the grounds that the business had been operating at a loss for several years.
Chacho Landestoy said that on 16 August last year, the salt production company had a debt to the town hall of RD$4 million, which now exceeded RD$8 million and it had not paid its workers for nine consecutive fortnights. In addition there were production limitations and no sales.
However, the salt workers and the union leadership said that the mayor and council members' arguments were false and that the salt mine had not stopped producing salt for even one day, and that sales were better than ever.
Johnny de los Santos, president of the salt workers union described the mayor and the councilors as lazy and irresponsible and that the mayor of Bani was stopping the payment of their salaries.
According to the salt workers, the mine has been working under the town hall for 50 years, and is part of the culture and identity of the city of Bani. With its closure, according to De los Santos, the mayor and his councilors have thrown dozens of workers onto the streets, leaving them without work and without food for their children.
