Leonel Almonte, whose handling of other people's money led to the fall of the Banco Universal in the 1980s and the end of his flamboyant playboy lifestyle, is serving a 15-year sentence in the Najayo jail. Now, a judge of the Fourth Penal Chamber of the National District has ordered the Justice Department to comply with the house arrest granted by the Judge for the Execution of Sentences in San Cristobal. Judge Awilda Reyes took the decision when she accepted the appeal filed by Almonte's defense lawyers Ingrid Hidalgo and Manuel Garcia. The Justice Department had issued a statement that said that they would not concede an order for house arrest until the Penal Chamber of the Appeals Court in San Cristobal ruled on an appeal against such a decision that was filed by the Judge in charge of the Execution of the Sentence.
