Tropical Storm Isaac took a pronounced southern turn as it passed by Saona Island off the country's southeastern coast. This explains why hardly any rain or bad weather was felt in Punta Cana, La Romana and Santo Domingo as the storm passed by further away on a course that even took it south of the country's southwestern provinces of Barahona and Pedernales. Although the Dominican Republic is now expected to be spared the worst effects of the storm, a tropical storm warning is still in place.
MikeFisher, the DR1.com forum's Weather & Beyond forecaster reported that the storm was a "no-show" nationwide. "In Cap Cana and Cabeza de Toro we did not receive anything that could be named rain, some sprinkling here and there, some drops for a few minutes, the streets did not get a chance to get wet," he writes on the forum.
He added that the closest that Isaac got was around 130 miles (209 kms) off the southeastern coast. He forecast that Isaac would not touch Barahona and would pass to its south, while warning that heavy rainfall and strong winds were on the way.
