Minister of Education Josefina Pimentel has called for classes to restart today, Monday, 27 August. Schools were closed on Friday 24 August as a precautionary measure against the possible effects of Hurricane Isaac, which despite forecasts did not directly hit the Dominican Republic. However, strong gusts and heavy rains caused floods and damage, mainly in the southwest. The school year in the Dominican Republic officially began on 20 August.
Pimentel said that all schools that had not been affected should resume on Monday. Schools in affected communities should reopen for classes on Tuesday 28 August.
