Navy and Army brigades were hard at work on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 August to restore traffic along the Santo Domingo Malecon oceanfront boulevard. Santo Domingo City Government work teams joined in to help collect all the debris left by the massive waves. Crashing surf along the Malecon threw rocks and debris forcing the road to be closed off to traffic. The municipal authorities closed off the Malecon, from Autopista 30 de Mayo on the far west to through the Avenida Espana on the far east to reduce the risk to onlookers who flock to the Malecon to watch the spectacle of the waves, endangering their own lives.
