The Vida Azul Foundation has announced that an estimated 25,000 volunteers will join forces on Saturday, 15 September to clean up beaches around the Dominican Republic. Last year 21,734 people took part in the event and collected 239,074lbs of garbage from 78kms of coastline.

Vida Azul Foundation executive director Patricia Cardona reminded supporters of the importance of the annual event: "Many migratory birds eat the trash they find on our coasts and then die," she said, adding that most of the trash is plastic and foam, or glass bottles or plastic forks that people discard. She said Nagua beach used to have lots of this trash, but since people have become more aware now there is much less.

Cardona said that 127 countries would join the Annual Coastal Cleanup.

Volunteers can register at the website vidaazul.org before14 September. It is free of charge and volunteers can choose their location.

The activity is open to children if accompanied by an adult.

In Santo Domingo, the cleanup will take place along the Malecon, especially at the following points: San Gil Fort, opposite Vesuvio restaurant, the intersection with Maximo Gomez Avenue and at the Fray Anton de Montesinos Monument.

Brigades are also being assigned to Juan Dolio, Guayacanes, Boca Chica, the mouth of Boca de Yuma and Moca and other points, as reported in Diario Libre.

"It is not just a cleanup activity. We seek to create awareness so that after this event people do not throw garbage," said Cardona. She also urged people not to wait for an event of this type to keep beaches clean.

This year, all plastics will be transported in transparent bags and donated to industries for recycling.
