In a report released yesterday, Monday 27 August, the Ministry of Public Health said that the measures taken to prevent outbreaks of disease as a result of the rains from Tropical Storm Isaac have been stepped up. The Deputy Minister of Collective Health, Jose Rodriguez Aybar, said that they have issued special instructions to all health personnel in the southwestern region, where the storm hit hardest, to be very diligent in their work.
He announced that hospitals have been sent extra supplies, including chlorine for water treatment, and that they are also implementing an inoculation program. He said that the epidemiological watch is still active and called for reports on cases of fever and diarrhea. He said that as of this week, 35 cases of dengue were reported in the country, taking the total over 1,800. There were also 29 cases of leptospirosis.
