People are returning to their homes as the floodwaters from Tropical Storm Isaac subside. Yesterday, Tuesday 28 August the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) reported the number of displaced people had declined to 20,077, from 29,875 on Monday. Of this total, 17,745 are staying with friends and family, while 2,332 were in 22 government shelters.

The COE report also mentions that the number of houses affected went down from 6,693 to 5,783. At present, 4,695 houses are flooded, 1,015 were partially destroyed, and 73 completely destroyed. The number of communities that were cut off are also fewer, since of 106 on Monday, there are only 76. Most are in the province of Azua, where 45 communities were cut off by the flooding of rivers and streams, and in Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris), where 10 places are still cut off. Several provinces are still under Red Alert: Pedernales, Barahona, Santo Domingo, Monte Plata, San Cristobal, Peravia (Bani), Duarte (especially the Lower Yuna Basin) and Azua.
