The government needs more time to finish the evaluation of all the scenarios that it is analyzing regarding the fiscal situation and the reduction of public spending. For that reason, Thursday's meeting with the Economic, Social and Institutional Council (CESI) has been postponed. At the meeting, the government planned to present its proposal for a fiscal pact, or increase in taxation.

The announcement was made by the Minister of the Economy, Planning and Development, Temistocles Montas yesterday, Tuesday 28 August, during a press conference at the Presidential Palace. Montas was accompanied by the Minister of Hacienda Simon Lizardo, and Deputy Minister and Budget Director Luis Reyes, members of the commission created in the last meeting of the Council of Ministers to present proposals for the fiscal reform.

The minister said that the authorities consider that in the process of evaluation of the alternatives that the government will have to develop in regard to the fiscal policy, it is of vital importance to consult with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of the efforts to achieve an agreement with the credit agency.
