Barrios on the river call for help

Residents of the Santo Domingo riverside barrios of La Barquita and La Cienaga are appealing to the government to come to their assistance, as they keep bailing out water from their humble dwellings. According to El Caribe, more than 2,000 houses are affected by the floodwaters from the Ozama River. Along Gregorio Alegria Street, mattresses are being dried out on rooftops, and barefoot children and dozens of people with empty eyes sit and wait inside the San Jose Chapel, the official shelter for the area. Despite the gravity of the situation, official aid so far has amounted to five mattresses, 10 sets of sheets and 200 food rations - not enough to fulfill local needs. Community leaders called on the government to send 2000 food rations.
