Minister of Economy, Planning and Development Juan Temistocles Montas has announced that the meeting of the Economic and Social Council (CES), originally scheduled for today, Thursday 30 August, has been postponed until 17 September. The meeting will launch the discussions for tax reform as announced by the government. If the changes are to be included in the 2013 National Budget, a decision has to be made by October.
The announcement was made during a Government Economic Team meeting at the Presidential Palace, which was also attended by Minister of Hacienda Simon Lizardo and Luis Reyes, deputy minister of Hacienda and director general of the Budget.
According to Montas, the meeting was postponed because they needed to consult with the International Monetary Fund as part of the evaluation of the options open to the government.
He said that before taking office President Danilo Medina said that his administration would reach an agreement with the IMF in order to bring discipline to the Dominican economy and maintain macro-economic stability, as has been the case over the last eight years.
The next meeting of the Government Economic Team with the IMF is scheduled for the 17 September at the head office in Washington, where it is hoped that progress can be made towards an agreement, so the country can receive the necessary resources to help with the fiscal deficit for this year which is estimated to be more than RD$86 billion, although some say it is over RD$96 billion.
Meanwhile, Ligia Bonetti, president of the Dominican Republic Association of Industries (AIRD) met with Presidency Minister Jose Ramon Peralta at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Wednesday 29 August and offered the business sector's support to the new government. Interviewed after the meeting, she said that the AIRD favors giving all time that is needed for the government to get organized prior to discussing fiscal reform. She said that the industrial sector considers it very important for the government to present solutions to control spending before talking about increasing taxation.
