Minister of Agriculture Luis Ramon Rodriguez has said that the consumers and sellers of plantains and bananas should not be concerned about price increases as only 13% of plantations had been affected by tropical storm Isaac. He added that President Danilo Medina had ordered RD$200 million to be handed over as a special fund to support the sector.

Rodriguez said that he would start to disburse the money next week and would be working with the Agriculture Bank to refinance the debts of farmers affected by the storm.

During an interview at the Presidential Palace he said that Ministry brigades were currently working on plantain and banana plantations in the southwest, where 124,000 tareas were affected, as well as with coffee in the high part of the Sierra de Neyba. Teams are also working in San Jose de Ocoa, repairing roads damaged by mudslides and in Bajo Yuna, repairing roads and strengthening the banks of the Yuna River to prevent flooding.
