Former president Hipolito Mejia is considering an appeal to the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (CIDH) to look into the irregularities that, in his opinion, occurred during the recent electoral process.

In a letter addressed to the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), which will meet on September 5, Mejia said that the events that took place during the 20 May elections were unprecedented and went against the principles of the Inter-American Democratic Charter whose first article establishes the right of people in the Americas to democracy and the obligation of governments to defend it.

He pointed out that the electoral observation by the OAS should be improved, so that it would not be possible to use public funds and favor one candidate as happened here in the elections. He went on to question the role of electoral organizations that were supposed to guarantee equality, according to the Constitution and Electoral Law, highlighting the decisions, omissions and violations of rights that took place during the electoral process.

He said that the ruling PLD had complete control of the state organs and it could lead to significant changes that could undermine democracy in the Dominican Republic
