The Catholic Church and several patriotic organizations have appealed to Congress asking for a change in the law to make 6 January (Three Kings Day) and 26 January (Birthday of Juan Pablo Duarte) public holidays and non-working days nationwide.

Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez delivered the proposal to the Deputy representing the National District, Yudelka de la Rosa, who promised to put it to the Chamber of Deputies as soon as possible.

The proposal has the support of the Permanent Commission of National Anniversaries, the Duarte Institute and the Catholic Church's Pastoral Youth Patriotic Values Commission. The document was handed over during a ceremony, which was also attended by Fathers Wilfredo Montano and Angel Maria Acevedo, advisor and coordinator of the Pastoral Youth Patriotic Values Commission, the president of the Duarte Institute, Jose Perez Savinon and the president of the National Anniversaries Commission, Juan Daniel Balcacer.

They said that the country should show its gratitude to Juan Pablo Duarte and honor the date of his birth, because he was an exceptional man.

Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez said that Three Kings Day had been celebrated in Christian countries for two thousand years.

Balcacer said that moving the dates to extend the closest weekend, as is done at present, renders them meaningless.
