Euclides Gutierrez Felix, recently confirmed as Superintendent of Insurance, has announced that he has paid the final installment on a payment plan he agreed to with the Public Electricity Corporation after TV journalist Nuria Piera revealed he had a long-standing debt totaling millions of pesos with the the EdeSur power provider. Gutierrez signed the payment agreement on 31 August 2011. He initially refused to pay on the grounds that power outages had caused him financial losses by having to install private power generation units and took his case to court, but continued to receive power service. He delivered the final payment of RD$200,824 by certified check to Hipolito Nunez, administrator of EdeSur in the presence of CDEEE executive vice president Ruben Jimenez Bichara. When the story broke last year, the privileges enjoyed by government officials returned to the spotlight, as any normal citizen would have had their power supply turned off.
