As of today, some 5,060 schools across the country will begin to serve the school breakfast benefitting some 1,431,391 students this year. School breakfasts are an important incentive for poorer parents to send their children to school.

The Ministry of Education reported that everything is ready for renewing the School Meals Program (PAE) which during the 2012-2013 school year will continue to supply food through its three sub-programs: Marginal Urban, REAL (School Rations with Local Foods) and Border.

The Administration, Nutrition and Health Department at the Student Welfare Department (DGBE) says that in the Marginal Urban foods program, the PAE will be distributed to 3,886 schools and benefit 1,316,007 students; the PAE REAL will cover 681 schools and 70,071 students and the Border style will reach 483 schools and 45,313 students. Another 97 schools with an enrollment of 37,989 students, which operate under the new extended day program will be included in the Marginal Urban version, whose menu is composed of bread, sponge cake, flavored milk, nutritional crackers, both sweetened and salty, and fruit nectar. The PAE-REAL in the morning and afternoon session is composed of plantains, both green and ripe, scrambled eggs, prepared milk, bread with yellow cheese, balls of corn flour, rice, corn fritters and oatmeal.
