Repeated announcements by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce about revising the taxes on transportation, combined with last week's fuel prices increase have led the carriers to draw up a Plan "B" to deal with the situation. A meeting with the head of the Ministry, Jose del Castillo Savinon is scheduled for Tuesday, 4 September. Blas Peralta of Fenatrado, the largest trucking association, warned that they would increase fares to compensate for the higher costs. The government has allowed Fenatrado to impose a monopoly on cargo transportation.

The transport sector receives an annual diesel subsidy of RD$1.56 billion. Transporters want the Hydrocarbon Law to be modified to make it transparent, and for the government to fulfill the agreement reached in 2008. If this were respected, they say fuel prices would be RD$155 for a gallon of diesel (this week premium diesel costs RD$201.90, while regular diesel is being sold at RD$195.20) and RD$55 for propane (instead of the present RD$88).

Both Peralta as well as Ramon Perez Figuereo, spokesman for the Central Transporters Union (CNTU), say that the drivers do not want the subsidy, but they are opposed to other businesses receiving it. Perez Figuereo believes that if they are going to withdraw the subsidy, it should apply to everyone.
