Five of sixteen workers remain hospitalized with second and third-degree burns after a leaking propane tank exploded and destroyed one of the kitchens at the Grand Paradise Amhsa Marina Hotel in Bavaro in the province of La Altagracia. Eleven of the employees were treated and released but five are still in the hospital. While the explosion in the basement kitchen area destroyed the chimney, ovens and most of the other equipment, there were no fatalities and only a few people were in the area at the time of the incident.
The Canadian company Blue Diamond had recently announced the purchase of the Grand Paradise Bavaro Beach Resort, Casino and Spa and that it would take over the management of the resort that continues to operate as Grand Paradise Bavaro Beach Resort through to 30 April 2013.
