Casandra Damiron was best known as "la soberana," (the sovereign) when for many years she royally performed merengue music and dance. In her honor, the association of entertainment reporters (Acroarte) with the sponsorship of Presidente beer created the Casandra Awards in 1985, with the grand prize of "El Soberano" awarded to the best artist of the year or for outstanding performance. However, Casandra Damiron's relatives recently had differences with the organizers, and disputed the use of their mother's name.

In response, Acroarte has announced a change in the name of the annual show business awards, changing the name to the more generic "Premios Soberano". Acroarte announced that the big prize would now be known as "El Gran Soberano." The awards are scheduled for 9 April 2013. The assembly of entertainment writers chose Premios Soberano from the final selection of names that also included Premios Acroarte and Premios Ambar.

However, Jose Eliseo Rivera, son of Casandra Damiron, said that the Soberano name could not be used either. He said that the figure of the 'soberano' and the statuette were registered as symbols of the Premios Casandra and legally cannot be used.
