Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister of National Defense and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) and the head of the visiting Canadian trade mission, accompanied by Canadian ambassador Todd Kuiack and members of the trade mission met with President Danilo Medina at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Tuesday 4 September and expressed an interest in establishing a free trade agreement with the Dominican Republic. The ambassadors informed President Medina that 20 trade organizations were represented in the delegation, offering a range of business opportunities including infrastructure, agro-industry, telecommunications and energy. Valcourt spoke of the interest of his government is to assist with the energy sector where Canada has vast experience, as reported in El Caribe.

Dominican Minister of Foreign Relations Carlos Morales Troncoso accompanied the Canadian delegation in the meeting at the Presidential Palace.

During a press conference after the meeting, Valcourt said that the Canadian government would sign an agreement to assist the electricity sector in the Dominican Republic. He said the delegation also discussed tourism, aviation security, and Canadian investor security. They mentioned the possibility of increasing air flights from Canada, as reported in Diario Libre.
