The new president of the Supreme Court of Justice has directed his attention to the implementation of programs that seek to modernize property registration in the Dominican Republic. Speaking on The Challenges of the Judicial Branch at an event organized by the Foundation for Institutionalism and Justice (Finjus), Mariano German Mejia mentioned two key areas where the country is lacking, as reported in Diario Libre. The first, he said was the implementation of the US$65.3 million Property Jurisdiction reform program, where not even a third of the objectives had been met. He said he has asked the Chamber of Accounts to carry out an audit of the funds that have been disbursed.
The second serious challenge he mentioned is penal justice. He said that only a third of those with pending court cases who are released on bail are later tried. He said that this has generated "great impunity," which should be of concern to all sectors in the field of justice.
