Francisco Alberto Gautreaux Calcano, a 43-year old Dominican who passed himself off as his country's ambassador in the United States has been sentenced to a minimum of 15 months and a maximum of four years in jail in Rikers Island after pleading guilty to the charges of fraud and theft.
The crimes were committed between October 2010 and January 2011 when, posing as ambassador Roberto Saladin, he asked people in New York and the Dominican Republic for money to raise funds for emergency vehicles in the DR. The people he approached include the State Senator for New York, Adriano Espaillat, telling him he needed the money to send four-wheel drive vehicles to Salcedo. He also approached the mayor of Salcedo and his brother, who lives in New York, and managed to raise US$11,545 for the non-existent vehicles. Subsequent investigations revealed another victim, an orphanage in the Dominican Republic, which sent him US$5,000 for a non-existent bus.
