The City Government of the National District (Santo Domingo) has the cooperation of the Ministry of Armed Forces and the Police to improve security in areas popular with tourists, now that the city expects to welcome thousands of tourists who will be bussed in on tours from Punta Cana. The plan is to convert Santo Domingo into the most popular day trip among tourists who visit Punta Cana now that the brand new Coral Highway puts the city two hours away.

Mayor Roberto Salcedo also announced preparations for the start of the Santo Domingo Tourism Route are advanced. The route will include visits to the Colonial City, the Malecon, the Mirador del Sur Park, Botanical Gardens, National Music Conservatory, Plaza de la Cultura, and other attractions.

At a press conference after the meeting, Salcedo said city government officials and the security forces had also discussed preparations at the start of the peak weeks of the Atlantic Hurricane Season in order to mitigate damage in case of a hurricane affecting the city. The peak hurricane time is the last two weeks in September.

Salcedo met with Armed Forces chief Admiral Sigfrido Pared Perez, Major General Jose Armando Polanco Gomez of the Police, Major General Ruben Paulino Sem of the Army, Major General Ramon Hernandez of the Air Force, and Navy chief, Vice Admiral Edwin Rosario.

Mayor Salcedo said that security would be stepped up in the Independence Park, all along the 14kms of the Malecon, the outskirts of the Botanical Gardens where hundreds of runners and walkers exercise every day, and the Mirador del Sur Park. He said the city government also seeks to improve security at the 30 outdoor gyms that are being installed in public parks.

He said that President Danilo Medina has announced the plan is for 10 million tourists to visit the Dominican Republic every year, double the current total of five million. "That means that the National District, the Dominican capital, should become of the most attractive destination for tourists, and that means security is an important issue," he stated.
