Deputy Ramon (Papo) Fernandez (PRD-Santiago Rodriguez) was stripped of legislative immunity by his fellow legislators yesterday, Thursday 6 September. He is accused of eloping with a 14-year old in his Santiago Rodriguez community in 2009, an action that while not unusual, is against Dominican law. He was not a legislator at the time, but later when the case was pressed against him, he evaded normal justice using his legislative immunity.

A total of 97 legislators voted to revoke his legislative immunity, while 47 voted against the revocation and 17 abstained. The vote was called at the request of attorney general Francisco Dominguez Brito. The legislator has complained that he is being singled out for committing a crime for political reasons. He justifies the relationship by describing it as "a custom". In the Dominican Republic having sex with a minor is a crime, but these cases are rarely taken to justice.

The parents of the minor took the case to court that sentenced him to a year in jail.

The Supreme Court had ordered him to serve six months in Najayo jail.
