The Conference of Dominican Bishops held a celebratory Mass in Santiago de los Caballeros yesterday, Sunday 9 September to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra. The ceremony was headed by Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez and Mass was co-celebrated by Archbishop Ramon Benito de la Rosa y Carpio and university rector Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado. During his sermon, De la Rosa y Carpio said that the Church has always held education to be its first social and community action. Messages from Pope Benedict XVI, the Papal Nuncio and civilian entities such as the Santiago Development Association were read out, and the Cardinal said that "the founders carried out a great mission by giving the country an excellent university." After the Mass, a commemorative plaza honoring the founding bishops was inaugurated. The bishops were: Cardinal Octavio Antonio Beras Rojas, Bishop Hugo Eduardo Polanco Brito, Francisco Panal Ramirez, Juan Feliz Pepen and Thomas Francis Reilly.
