The National Police in Santiago says it has captured most of the gang that they accuse of having robbed, tied up and eventually strangled a 75-year old woman in the La Joya section of the city. The gang included the watchman, according to El Nuevo Diario, and six others, who used bolt cutters to enter the house through an aluminum jalousie-type window. They made off with some RD$55,000 in money and jewelry. They were arrested in the middle of downtown Santiago when they pawned the jewelry.

The elderly woman was the mother of former Major League baseball player Miguel (Guelo) Dilone who had refused to move from her neighborhood. The Police solved the robbery-murder within 48 hours.

Miguel Dilone expressed his outrage at the involvement of watchman Andres Martinez Garcia. "His mother was my mom's best friend," he told Diario Libre. He said that less than three days ago he had given him a mahogany door and when the river flooded the neighborhood, he gave him more than RD$20,000 worth of clothes. "He was the last person I believed would be capable of stealing a peso from anyone," lamented the baseball player. He said he had tried to move his mom out of the neighborhood, but she had refused. Dilone added that others had said that if he moved her, she would die.
