After the pontoon bridge over the Ozama River was opened, tons of garbage are now littering the shore of Santo Domingo off the Malecon.
Most of the waste consists of plastic plates, glasses, bottles, and containers but there are also tree trunks and other types of garbage. Most can be seen at La Playita, between the monument to Friar Anton de Montesinos and Palo Hincado Street. However there is also more in Guibia beach.
National District council clean-up teams are filling hundreds of plastic bags with the garbage but more appears every day.
The garbage was washed downstream during Tropical Storm Isaac last month.
