According to Diario Libre, most workers in the country do not have social security because they are not in formal employment. Only 1.6 million people are formally employed while 2.2 million are working informally. Informal sector workers are defined as workers in establishments with less than five employees, the self-employed and farmers, drivers, artisans, salespeople and non-qualified workers.

According to figures from the National Statistics Office (ONE) and the national workforce data from the Central Bank, in 2011 the total population was 10,010,590 and the economically active population was 4,601,758, of whom 3.9 million were in some kind of work.

According to a source at the Central Bank, in the last seven years, from 2004 to 2011, 751,428 net new jobs have been created, an increase of 23.63%, but during the first half of this year the number of business in the country only increased by 0.9%.

Looking at the Economic Index of Yellow Pages, the total number of businesses in the first half of the year increased by 896 to 104,483 of which 77.2% are commercial, 7% industrial, and 4.7% financial. Most businesses, 54.7% are in Santo Domingo and 30.7% in the north.
