President Danilo Medina has announced the creation of a new National Health Plan for the DR. Details of the plan to improve conditions in the health sector would be released in two weeks said Minister of Public Health Freddy Hidalgo. Diario Libre reports that President Danilo Medina held a meeting with representatives of the state health sector yesterday, Tuesday 11 September, where it was agreed to increase government funding for treating patients with catastrophic illnesses in the public hospitals.
The meeting was held at the Presidential Palace. At the end of the meeting, Hidalgo told the press that at present they are spending RD$1.5 billion to deal with chronic illnesses, but these resources would be increased considerably. He did not specify the amount that would be assigned for this use. The official added that strengthening primary health care and the service networks are also included in the President's plan for improving health in the country.
