The government has announced that it will budget RD$200 million to add to the US$30 million five-year loan from the Inter American Development Bank (IDB) for restoring and re-launching Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone as a major tourist destination. The funding for this project will be included in the 2013 budget.
Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia made the announcement after a high-level meeting between President Medina and the leading voices of Colonial Zone tourism at the Presidential Palace. The government listened to proposals made by a private initiative known as "Ovando City" that proposes solutions for enhancing the historic center, a national priority given the expected major increase in the number of tourists in Santo Domingo now that the Coral Highway puts Punta Cana just over two hours drive away. Minister Garcia noted that the increasing number of malls is turning Santo Domingo into a major shopping area in the Caribbean.
Louis Brocker, Lisandro Macarrulla, Johnny Acevedo, Peter Gauster, Claudio Suarez, Claudia Prida, Sergio Collado Amengual, Mercedes Coste, Adrian Castro, Leo Walser, Jose Victor Lopez, Juan B. Vicini Lluberes and Maribel Villalona presented the Ovando City proposals.
At the meeting, President Medina and Tourism Minister Garcia were accompanied by government officials including Presidency Minister Gustavo Montalvo, Minister of Hacienda Simon Lizardo, Minister of Culture Jose Antonio Rodriguez, Minister of Interior and P olice Jose Ramon Fadul, Minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo, Minister of Economy Temistocles Montas, executive vice president of the CDEEE Ruben Jimenez Bichara, city water agency director Alejandro Montas, the head of the Telecommunications Institute Carlos Amarante Baret, City Mayor Roberto Salcedo, and Andres Navarro, secretary of the National District City Hall.
