The percentage increase in violent crimes in the province of Santiago in the first seven months of 2012 is the same as for the first half of 2011, and is causing widespread concern in the city. According to a report from the Volunteers for the Security of Santiago (VOSES), 15 violent deaths were registered in January 2012, 9 in February, 20 in March, 14 in April, 23 in May, 18 in June and 20 in July, for a total of 119. A total of 79% of the victims were people between the ages of 18 and 47, including 111 men and eight women, many of whom were killed during robberies, confrontations with the Police and other incidents.

The report also found that the most violent months were May and July, which showed higher than average rates. VOSES executive director Masiel Reyes said that the Police should boost their efforts and strategies in order to reduce violent incidents and crime. "We are worried because we expected a reduction in violent deaths in this province," said Reyes, after the presentation of the report.

The most recent case was the murder of the mother of a former Major League baseball player during a robbery. Five people are now under arrest for this crime and two have been sent to preventive custody before standing trial.
