At a press conference yesterday, Wednesday 12 September, Agriculture Minister Luis Ramon Rodriguez announced that agricultural institutions would receive RD$3.11 billion to boost production of basic foods, improve rural infrastructure and create jobs in the rural areas during the Christmas period.

The institutions involved are the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI), which will receive RD$287 million for infrastructure repairs, the Agriculture Bank, which will get RD$2 billion, the Dominican Agrarian Institute (IAD), which will get RD$131 million to improve living conditions for farmers, the Agricultural Development Fund (FEDA), which will receive RD$190 million to mitigate poverty and another RD$100 million for a supervised credit program for small and medium sized farms and finally RD$10 million for the Price Stabilization Institute (INESPRE).

Rodriguez said that the Ministry would use its allowance to plant 400,000 tareas and repair roads, and RD$45 million to support the cattle industry, especially dairy farmers.

Rodriguez concluded that the plan would mainly benefit 250 small and medium scale farmers, and the land to be planted would include corn, peas, sweet potatoes, cassava, salad tomatoes, carrots, cilantro, cabbage, beets, cucumbers, lettuce, pumpkin, eggplant, plantains and bananas.
