Administrative Presidency Minister Jose Ramon Peralta Fernandez has announced that the Dominican government does not have the cash requested to sponsor the Miss Universe 2012 contest. As reported in the Washington Post, a delegation of the organizers headed by their vice president Andrea Berner visited the Presidential Palace and asked for US$6 million towards the event.

Peralta Fernandez said that if they wanted to hold the event here they would have to raise the money needed from the private sector. The Miss Universe Organization responded by saying that it has already received what it described as overwhelming support from the private sector, including the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana. According to reports, the event could take place in Punta Cana this December. The Dominican Republic last hosted the Miss Universe contest in 1977, at the National Theater in Santo Domingo.
